If you have received a nursing or paramedical allotment through LBS, you do not have to settle for it if a better college is within your reach. The Higher Option facility lets you secure your current seat and still try to move up — but only if you use it carefully. Here is exactly how it works.
What is the Higher Option?
The Higher Option is a facility where, once you are allotted a seat in an early round, that admission stays safe, and at the same time you remain in the running for a better-graded college based on your marks. In short: you do not lose what you already have while you aim higher.
This facility is available in the LBS allotment process and in colleges under the Christian Management Association.
How It Works — Keep Your Seat, Aim Higher
1. You get an allotment in an early round and secure admission at that college.
2. You opt for Higher Option so you remain considered for higher-preference colleges.
3. If a better college becomes available on merit in a later round, you are upgraded to it.
4. If nothing better comes, you simply keep your existing seat — there is no loss.
> Give your options very carefully. Once you submit your preference order, it decides where you can move. List colleges in the true order you want them — a careless option list is the most common mistake students make.
The Fee Reality in Kerala — Read This Before You Choose
This is where many families lose money for no benefit:
- In Kerala, fee concessions/benefits apply only at government colleges.
- SI-MET, CPAS (government undertaking) and private self-financing colleges charge the same fee.
- So when you are paying the same fee anyway, choose the college that gives you the best clinical training, proper academic standards and better facilities — not just any seat.
A seat is not the goal. A quality nursing degree that gets you hired is the goal.
Beware of New / Substandard Colleges
Every year, many new nursing colleges open in Kerala across both government and private sectors. Several of them lack the basic infrastructure or proper clinical training facilities a nurse actually needs.
To graduate as a quality, employable nurse, list the top, well-established colleges in your options. Studying at a substandard college in Kerala is no better than going to a low-standard college in another state — and it can seriously hurt your career.
How to Build Your Option List
- Put the highest-quality colleges first — strong clinical training, good hospital tie-ups, experienced faculty.
- Do not rank a college higher just because it is nearer or cheaper if the fee is the same anyway.
- Check INC / Nursing Council recognition and real clinical exposure before listing.
- When in doubt about a college's quality, ask before you lock your options — a wrong order can cost you a better seat.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose my current seat if I opt for Higher Option?
No. Your existing allotment stays secure. Higher Option only moves you up to a better college if one is available on merit — never down.
Where is the Higher Option available?
In the LBS allotment process and in colleges under the Christian Management Association.
If the fee is the same everywhere, which college should I pick?
The one with better clinical training, academic standards and facilities. Paying the same fee for a weaker college gives you no advantage.
Are all new nursing colleges safe to choose?
No. Many new colleges lack proper infrastructure and clinical training. Prefer established, well-recognised colleges.
