✍️ Campus Search Team📅 2026-04-037 min read

South India produces a large share of India's nursing workforce, and a significant portion of that workforce eventually finds employment in the UK, UAE, USA, Australia, and Canada. If you're planning your nursing education with international work in mind, here is what you need to know.

Why South Indian Nurses Are in Demand Globally

1. English fluency: Most South Indian nursing graduates are comfortable in English

2. Strong clinical training: South India's large teaching hospital network provides excellent bedside experience

3. RGUHS/TNMGRMU affiliations: Both universities are well-recognised by international licensing bodies

4. Work ethic and adaptability: South Indian nurses have built a strong reputation in global hospitals

Which South Indian Colleges Are Recognised?

Generally, BSc Nursing colleges affiliated to:

  • RGUHS (Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences) — Karnataka
  • TNMGRMU (Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University) — Tamil Nadu
  • Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) — Kerala

...are recognised by UK NMC, UAE DHA/DOH, and for NCLEX application.

Important: GNM diploma is generally NOT directly accepted for UK, USA, or Canada. You would need a BSc bridge course first.

Steps to Take From Your First Year of College

1. Study hard and maintain good grades — transcripts matter for international applications

2. Get maximum clinical exposure — choose hospitals with good case mix

3. Improve your English — especially medical terminology and communication

4. Apply for IELTS or OET in your final year (required for UK/UAE)

5. Get 1–2 years of experience after graduation before applying abroad
